The Quantico Yacht Club invites sailors to participate in the 2026 Spring Tune Up Regatta on Saturday 09 May 2026 on the Potomac River at Marine Corps Base Quantico, Virginia.


 

The Spring Tune Up Regatta marks the start of the local sailing season and is designed to be welcoming to both experienced racers and sailors interested in trying racing for the first time. The event provides an opportunity to shake down boats after the winter, tune up crews, and enjoy a day on the water with the regional sailing community.


 

Whether you are a seasoned racer looking for a competitive start to the season or a cruising sailor curious about racing, this event is intended to be relaxed, friendly, and fun. The race area offers open water sailing and excellent conditions typical of the Potomac River in the spring.


 

  1. Eligibility and Entry


 


 

The regatta is open to all sailboats with a valid PHRF rating.

  1. Rules


 


 

This regatta will be governed by the current Racing Rules of Sailing.


 

Additional sailing instructions or course modifications will be provided at the Skippers Meeting prior to the race.


 

  1. Classes


 


 

Racing classes are expected to include:


 

Spinnaker

Non Spinnaker


 

Additional classes may be established based on registration and participation.

0900 Skippers Meeting

Location: Picnic area outside the Quantico Marina bathhouse


 

1000 First Warning Signal


 

The Race Committee may start classes together or sequentially depending on participation and weather conditions.


 

Race communications will be made on VHF Channel 69. Boats should monitor VHF Channel 16 for hailing if required.


 

  1. Courses


 


 

Courses will be approximately 5 or 10 nautical miles depending on wind conditions and will be announced during the Skippers Meeting.


 

Typical courses off Quantico Marina use government navigation marks and local reference points including power poles.


 

Example courses may include:


 

5 nautical mile course

Start at the Quantico Marina flagpole area to G25 to PP2 to PP5 and finish.


 

10 nautical mile course

Start to G23 to PP2 to PP5 and return to finish.


 

  1. Entry Fee


 


 

The entry fee for the regatta is 25 dollars per boat.


 

  1. Scoring


 


 

Races will be scored using PHRF time corrections.


 

Finish times will be recorded by the Race Committee and scored using the CBYRA PHRF RaceCaptain scoring system.


 

If a committee boat is not present, finish times will be reported to the Race Committee using the phone number provided during the Skippers Meeting.


 

  1. Awards


 


 

Race awards will be presented to the first and second place finishers in each racing class.


 

  1. Facilities


 


 

The Quantico Marina provides transient slips and boat launching facilities.


 

The launch ramp is located at Hospital Point on Marine Corps Base Quantico off Quantico Creek.

Base access requirements may include:


 

Boat registration or documentation

Proof of insurance

Completion of required marina forms


 

Participants should ensure they comply with all Marine Corps Base Quantico access requirements.


 

  1. Safety


 


 

All competitors are responsible for the safety of their vessel and crew.


 

Each competitor shall decide whether to start or continue a race.


 

Boats must carry appropriate safety equipment and be capable of safe operation in expected sailing conditions.


 

  1. Risk


 


 

Competitors participate in this regatta entirely at their own risk. The organizing authority, race committee, and volunteers will not accept liability for material damage, personal injury, or death sustained in conjunction with or prior to, during, or after the regatta.

The Quantico Yacht Club is a private organization and Non Federal Entity operating aboard Marine Corps Base Quantico. It is not part of the Department of Defense or Marine Corps Community Services.


 

This event and all associated activities are not sponsored or endorsed by the United States Marine Corps, Marine Corps Community Services, or the Department of Defense.


 

Participation in this event does not imply endorsement by the Marine Corps or Marine Corps Community Services.


 

All participants must comply with Marine Corps Base Quantico access policies and applicable base regulations while aboard the installation.
